Opening of adventure around the mysterious island

At the end of May, two crewmen in “Blue Lug” landed Amami Oshima, where the rainy season began earlier than in Honshu.
First, we decided to make a round trip of the island by favorite bikes slowly.
A bike trip in the light style of camping ride with only a frame bag or the like attached to a mountain bike.
They say that this is their most favorite style. With the smallest baggage, we leave at once!

Amami Airport, which is the entrance of Amami, is located in the northern part of the island. First, one road to the south on National Route 58, which crosses the island. Since it is almost a pass, the road with severe ups and downs continues. However, in the non-daily way with Indian coral trees (Erythrina variegata) in the season to see and hibiscus in full bloom, we feel that even such trouble is fun.

Through cycad trees (Cycas revoluta) growing in colonies, first we head toward Uken-son, in the south of the island. It is at the foot of Mt. Yuwan-dake, which is the highest in Amami, and is said to be a village where a beautiful forest is alive. In this village, we hear that there is a particularly huge Chinese banyan tree (Ficus microcarpa) even on the whole island. Chinese banyan tree (Ficus microcarpa) in Kakeromajima, which is twenty minutes south of Amami Oshima by ferry, and a Chinese banyan tree in Takena&Osai community are also famous. First, however, we go to meet a Chinese banyan tree in Uken-son also as a tour around the island.

As we went down a pass of Mt. Yuwan-dake, we found a shoreline. It is an entrance of Uken-son. Still going along National Route 79 for a few minutes . . . we have found it! Even from a long distance, we realize it at a glance. It must be that huge tree. This old tree is even said to be “the tree where the spirit dwells and causes happiness.” However, perhaps owing to a moderate atmosphere of the village or influence of a nostalgic bus stop, it does not have overwhelming holiness but we feel rather warm as if it hugged us.

After leaving the Chinese banyan tree in Uken-son, we look for a place to sleep tonight. Campgrounds in Amami use the topography and most of them are located along the sea. First, like the southern, let's go by the sea and stay there for a night. The moment setter function that we have registered in the watches in advance notifies us that the sun is going to set in the island. Looking down at the mileage and the consumed calories, we are surprised that we have moved more than we expected. While watching the sunset, let's start setting up a tent at once.

Under the evening sky, while surrounding an open-air fire, we think about the huge Chinese banyan tree that we met today. Mysteriously, around Mother Nature, we don't know why, but we became sentimental. However, it is also one of the real joys of such trips of two men. “Still, we have moved considerably from the first day (laugh). Wasn't it at high pace a little?” Thus, while reflecting with laughter, we consider a plan for tomorrow.
